 Bike to Work Day/Week Coordinator - INDYCOG

The mission of INDYCOG, founded in 2010, is to promote bicycling as a safe and viable means of transportation and recreation in Indianapolis. We will accomplish our mission through advocacy, collaboration, education, and promoting bicycle culture.


Definition and Purpose of Position:
INDYCOG is looking for an intern/volunteer to manage our 2016 Bike to Work Day to be held on Friday, May 20th, 2016, in addition to other Bike Month activities. This position will be essential in ensuring that we meet our goal of doubling the participation (~750 registrants) from the 2013 event and getting more people on their bikes. In this position, you will manage the Bike to Work Day Committee (consisting of board members & volunteers) to guarantee the growth and success of this event. Responsibilities may also include coordinating: refreshment sponsorships and logistics, the Bike Away from Work party, volunteers, etc.. This key person makes the event a well-orchestrated seamless operation. This position will work under the supervision of the Executive Director.


Most importantly, we want your internship to be one in which you grow your knowledge base of nonprofit management as well as the field of sustainable transportation and get hands-on experience in a professional work setting.

Job duties:
Potential job duties include but are not limited to:

  • Coordinate Bike to Work Day (BTWD) planning efforts with the Bike to Work Day/Month committee, government agencies, transit agencies, employers, volunteers and other key stakeholders
  • Organize and attend monthly Bike to Work Day Committee Meetings
  • Assist in identifying and securing sponsorships and communicate clearly with sponsors
  • Oversee the distribution of Bike to Work promotional materials
  • Write general content about the event
  • Send press releases
  • Contact press and set-up interviews
  • Collaborate with companies, nonprofits and governmental agencies to have a call for events for Bike Week
  • Assist in soliciting donations for giveaways, cash sponsorships and prizes
  • Assist with other tasks related to the event management including phone calls, data entry, mailings, etc.
  • Organize volunteers for day of event

Qualifications:

  • A desire to improve the Indianapolis bicycle community
  • Enthusiasm about bicycling as a means of transportation and recreation
  • Excellent writing and presentation skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office or similar software, experience with web and publishing tools a plus
  • Strong problem solving skills
  • Good customer service and interpersonal communication skills
  • Experience in organizing and coordinating events
  • Experience with fundraising solicitations and cold-calls over the phone and email
  • Must be detailed oriented

Additional Information:

We are looking for someone to start immediately.
Must be able to commit 4-6 hours/week.

The candidate will gain experience in community-building, volunteer management, sustainable transportation, and nonprofit management.
