Police officers went back to class this week.

Forty officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, Indiana State Conservation Officers and Pike Township and Butler University school police went through International Police Mountain Bike Association on Pike High School’s campus Monday through today.

“It’s a great community relations tool,” said Sgt. Matt Grimes, IMPD Northwest District spokesman. “People don’t want to flag you down in cars, but they will on bikes. With criminals, you can sneak up on them because they don’t expect a police officer on a bike.”

Before the Indianapolis Police Department and Marion County Sheriff’s Department merged in 2007, IPD had a small bike patrol force that eventually fizzled, Grimes said. Now IMPD is working to revitalize the program.

The officers will finish training early this afternoon after they wrap up obstacle course and ride testing. They also took a written test.

“I’ve always loved bicycling, and this will give me a better opportunity to patrol the district,” said Northwest District patrol officer Carl Grigsby. “I learned to gear up to get in pursuit mode, climb curbs and stairs and go down stairs. We’ll be able to go from foot to bike pursuits. It’s stealthy.”

I'm all for cops on bikes, just get off the damn sidewalk.
